Justice and Justice Alone - Deuteronomy 16: 18-20
The reason that I am running to be your next State Attorney is quite simple. The justice system in Florida and in the 7th Judicial Circuit is broken, and I believe in my heart that I can help fix it. Let me give you a stunning fact...there are more people incarcerated in the State of Florida per capita than in any other country on the planet. That means one of two things. Either that the people in Florida are the worst people on the earth or it means that the Criminal Justice System is out of control with a heavy bias towards incarceration. Now don't get me wrong, as a former prosecutor I am all for incarceration for the people who deserve incarceration and many people do. The problem is that incarceration has become the default end game for most people who enter the system as the result mandatory minimums and restrictive sentencing guidelines. Discretion has been taken away from the sentencing process for the most part. The pendulum has swung way too far to the side of incarceration. We need to bring that pendulum back to the middle. We need Common Sense Justice For All People.
Think about something...what is the one piece of non-covid related legislation that the Democrats and the Republicans have agreed to over the last two years? Criminal Justice Reform. The First Step Act has been praised by both sides of the aisle as long overdue legislation on a National level to correct the same problem that we are dealing with in Florida. Now it needs to be addressed in Florida.
As your State Attorney, I will lead the charge to bring common sense back to the sentencing process. I will work tirelessly to create common sense diversionary programs within the Court System to create financial and time efficiencies within the system and to divert first time, non- violent offenders in a manner that won't turn them into career criminals. We have a model on a National Level to create Common Sense Justice for all. We just need someone to do something about it here in Florida. As your State Attorney, I will do exactly that.
