Justice and Justice Alone - Deuteronomy 16: 18-20
The sentencing system in the State of Florida must be addressed and drastically modified consistent with what we have seen on the federal Level with the First Step Act. I will champion this cause as it is at the root of the unfairness that exists within the criminal justice system in Florida. Currently the system defaults to punishment all of the time. By making punishment the end goal of every case, many people in the criminal justice system are forced to take plea deals that minimize their willingness to litigate their due process rights. This priority of punishment also creates career criminals as many people end upon losing their jobs, their family and hope of a future once convicted and sentenced to incarceration. The goal of punishment has its place for violent offenders and multiple other categories of criminals under the Florida Statutes.
Common Sense Diversionary Programs that save the TAXPAYERS of the 7th Circuit money and create efficiencies within the Criminal Justice System. I will champion well thought out, targeted programs that divert non-violent, victimless offenders into well supervised programs that give the first time offender the option of getting their life back on track instead of heading down the path of potentially becoming a career criminal.
Special Units to address key issues within the 7th Circuit. As your State Attorney I will develop special units within my office that will address issues that are specific to our jurisdiction. Two of the first specialized units I will implement will be an Elderly and Vulnerable Adult Exploitation Prevention Unit and White Collar Crime Unit.
